Los Angeles to Implement Street Safety Project in Chinatown, Adding Protected Bike Lanes

Los Angeles is set to begin the Spring/Alameda Safety and Mobility Project in Chinatown this August. This urban infrastructure upgrade targets a 1.2-mile stretch of Alameda Street and North Spring Street, from Union Station to Wilhardt Street, adjacent to the Los Angeles State Historic Park. The project will reallocate roadway space by removing one vehicle travel lane in each direction to install Class IV protected bike lanes.

Initial work, including accessibility improvements like curb ramps and signal upgrades, is expected through Spring 2027. Street resurfacing and final re-striping for the new bike lanes are scheduled for Summer 2027, with project completion anticipated by Fall 2027. Work will primarily occur weekdays and Saturdays, starting at Alpine and Alameda Streets.
