Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Advances $1.8 Billion Expansion in West Carson
The Harbor-UCLA Medical Center's $1.8 billion expansion project in West Carson is moving forward, with completion anticipated in 2028. This significant development includes a 555,000-square-foot, nine-story hospital tower designed to house 347 patient beds, encompassing intensive care, medical-surgical, neonatal intensive care, and mental health units. Additionally, a 370,000-square-foot, six-story structure is being built adjacent to the main hospital, providing outpatient clinics, conference facilities, and administrative offices.
This extensive construction effort is a direct response to California's SB 1953 legislation, which mandates that hospitals retrofit or rebuild older facilities to meet stringent earthquake safety standards by 2030. The design-build team for the clinic building comprises Hensel Phelps, HMC Architects, and CO Architects. Similar seismic upgrade projects are underway at other major medical centers across Los Angeles County, reflecting a broader industry trend. For developers and lenders, this project highlights ongoing investment in critical healthcare infrastructure and the impact of state regulations on large-scale institutional development.
