Samara, a builder recognized for its accessory dwelling unit (ADU) products, has announced its expansion into small-scale single-family infill projects under the name Locale by Samara. The company will construct clusters of two to ten detached homes in established neighborhoods across Sonoma, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Los Angeles counties.
This move leverages California’s Starter Home Revitalization Act (SB 1123), which streamlines the approval process for subdividing eligible parcels for up to ten small-footprint homes. This legislation is seen as a significant measure to increase housing supply. The initiative targets job-rich coastal counties that are under pressure to meet state housing goals.
Samara’s model focuses on high-quality, rightsized homes on compact lots in high-demand areas, aiming to provide more accessible price points compared to traditional new construction. The first project in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, features two single-family homes, each with an ADU, reflecting a market preference for smaller, well-designed homes in prime locations.
