The Valiant Student Housing Project Opens Near UC Berkeley, Adding 265 Beds
The Valiant, a new student housing development located at 2538 Durant Avenue in Berkeley's Southside, has officially opened, providing 265 beds across 83 units for students near the UC Berkeley campus. Developed through a joint venture by Canyon Partners Real Estate LLC, The Martin Group, and Valiance Capital, the 88-foot-tall building also includes 1,460 square feet of commercial retail space.
The project, which secured initial funding in December 2022 and received development permits in summer 2023, features a mix of studios to four-bedroom apartments. Notably, five of the dwellings are deed-restricted for very low-income households. Designed by Studio KDA, the building emphasizes a supportive residential experience with amenities such as co-working spaces, a fitness center, and a rooftop deck offering panoramic views. With move-ins commencing recently, 98% of the market-rate beds were leased prior to the 2026-27 academic year, highlighting strong demand. This development significantly boosts student housing capacity and introduces new retail options in a key university-adjacent area.
